VLSI covers a large area of studies, which can be grouped into two major groups, VLSI back end, and front end flow. The courses that make up the front-end flow include courses from RTL Design, Analog Circuit Design, ASIC Functional Verification. Every other aspect of VLSI ranging from synthesis to physical verification falls under Back End courses. Therefore, your area of interest will determine whether you apply for front-end or Back End courses.
